The stationery manufacturing industry is a good example of the labor-intensive manufacturing from which China’s growth since the late 1970’s has derived from. By 2007, exports of stationery in China reached over U.S. $9.72 billion. The stationery industry itself consists of a wide product range and thus covers a broad spectrum of producers. The city of Yiwu in Zhejiang is one of the biggest pen producers in the world with nearly 500 different pen manufacturers, more than 1,200 sales businesses and a total output value of RMB 2 billion.
