In the past 30 years, China has asserted itself as a major player in the global clothing industry. In 2010, China’s clothing exports reached US $206.53 billion making it the biggest exporter of garments in the world. The main export markets for the industry’s products are the European Union, the United States, and Japan. Clothing accounted for 49% of U.S. imports in 2010 and 78.6% of Japan’s total imports in 2010.
The main production locations for garments are in Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Shandong provinces. The majority of producers for foreign consumption are located in Jaingsu and Zhejiang provinces, making them two of the primary sources for clothing retailers in the world.
