Sporting Goods

Foreign trade and China sporting goods has played an important role in the growth of Chinese industry. In 1999, China ranked first in exports of sports equipment to the United States with 37% coming from China, more than double the closest competition of Taiwan (12%) and Canada (7.1%).

Sporting goods export enterprises are mainly concentrated in the southeastern region of Guangdong Province. The majority of the exports are comprised of processed goods, whereas proprietary products make a much smaller contribution. In general, the sporting goods exported from China are primarily of average to low grade, thus competing through low production costs.  Given this, the average cost of name-brand sporting goods products in China are typically about 1/10th the global average for the same product. This points to the already clear cost advantage China has in manufacturing in this industry.
